Welcome to Somerset Fine Art : Watercolours and more
We are a gallery primarily interested in the traditional forms of art, in the mediums of watercolour and oil painting, and sculpture. In the event of you being interested in any piece please contact us.
Somerset Fine Art's primary interest in watercolour is in the clean washed and limpid execution, bereft of body white. This began, not as many collectors think, with Turner and his immediate followers. It really began between the wars with artists like Philip Wilson Steer, John Singer Sargent, Sir William Russell Flint, Edward Seago, Edward Wesson and Marjorie Best, and is continued today.
Watercolour is a very difficult medium. It was Rowland Hilder who likened watercolour painting to the elegance of the string quartet against the sonority, breadth, thrust and impact of an oil painting. It is this delicacy and freshness of the one-time application of paint which appeals to the collector.
We are fortunate to have acquired a superb collection of work by such artists and these are displayed here on our website, including paintings by Claude Buckle, Wallace F Brown and others. We are also keen on Shona stone sculpture and have some magnificent pieces for sale. We will be happy to provide further details of these upon request.
