Hilder, RowlandRowland Hilder was born on Long Island USA but his parents came from Kent and Hilder is a Kentish name.

As a child Rowland Hilder frequently crossed the Atlantic to stay with his grandparents in Kent until in 1915 the Hilder family returned to England to live. He studied at Goldsmith's College School of Art and later he became Professor of Art at Goldsmiths. He was commissioned to illustrate the novels 'Moby Dick', 'Treasure Island' and Mary Webb's famous book 'Precious Bane'.
